An Algebraic Approach to Polyphase Decomposition with an Application to Sample Rate Conversion - A Tutorial

The polyphase framework is a well-established tool in discrete-time signal processing. It can be used to simplify considerably the description of periodically time varying systems. From network theory it is known that there are structurally and functionally related networks to a given network that can be obtained e.g. by transposition or by taking the adjoint. In terms of functionality the transposition is of particular interest. We introduce an algebraic approach to the polyphase framework. Besides this novel component of systematics of the polyphase framework, it enables a very simple way of transposing the transmission characteristics of linear periodically time-varying systems. Thus, it is possible to exchange aliasing and imaging characteristics of linear periodically time-varying systems.
